Warning for garage managers after HSE crackdown
WORKSHOP managers without a formal approach to asbestos management are taking unnecessary risks, following a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) crackdown.
Debbie Hales, chief executive of The Asbestos & Insulation Company in Kent, says the HSE is increasingly targeting small businesses to check they have an asbestos management plan, something that became compulsory in 2004.
“Inspectors tend to target a particular area, so we often get a large number of calls from people saying they have had a visit from a safety inspector and don’t know what they should do,” said Debbie.
“A forklift truck business in Ashford was shutdown about a month ago for multiple health and safety breaches, including asbestos problems.
“Strictly speaking, anything other than a private residence must have an asbestos register,” she added.
Asbestos can still be found in around 3,000 everyday products that may be present in a workshop, including corrugated roofs, ceramic floors, insulation boards and some varieties of old toilet.
