TRW boss highlights reman profit opportunities for garages

CONSUMERS want eco-friendly products and the aftermarket has a “real opportunity” to benefit from supplying them, according to a senior boss at parts company TRW.

Michael von-Linden is head of TRW’s newly created Remanufacturing Group (RMG) division. The group is designed to take advantage of new opportunities in remanufacturing.

“The aftermarket has a real opportunity to exploit the benefits of environmentally-friendly products to the industry,” said Michael at the launch of the RMG. “Consumers want eco-friendly products and are more aware of the environment than ever before.

“The industry has a duty to make the consumer aware of their opportunity to fulfil their responsibility towards the environment,” added Michael.

Michael’s advice comes at the same time as new organisation the World Engine Remanufacturing Council was formed in London. It comprises an alliance of remanufacturing organizations from around the world.

“The independent engine remanufacturing industry already plays a significant role in the recycling of engine parts,” said Brian Ludford, secretary of the Federation of Engine Remanufacturers.

“They tackle emission problems on a daily basis, reducing overall outputs on the existing vehicle parc. Collectively, our combined activities have a significant influence on the reduction of carbon emissions on a global scale,” continued Brian.

“With greater governmental support, there is potential to expand the market for remanufactured engine products and increase quality standards within the industry significantly. This would have even further implications for emissions savings, worldwide,” he added.

Also on the remanufacturing front, ZF Trading boss Addy Doodt has spelt out the benefits of remanufactured clutches, saying properly remanufactured units are of exactly the same quality as new ones.

He urged customers to consider the difference between reconditioned clutches, which are cleaned and fitted with new friction components, and remanufactured units, which are completely dismantled, rebuilt and tested with warranties matching those of new clutches.

“On remanufactured clutches, the pressure plate, cover housing and diaphragm spring are all tested and the units are completely rebuilt to match OE standards,” said Addy.

“The environment is a big issue now. The clutch cover is the main bulk of the unit and there’s a 90% saving of energy through not having to make this again during the reman process.”
