Valeo says rise of latest exhaust system means extra work for garages
THE RISE of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) systems could mean added repair chances for garages, according to Valeo Service.
The company says EGR systems are now fitted on 90% of all new diesel vehicles, a figure which it claims is set to rise to 100% within the next two years.
EGR systems are designed to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel cars and are becoming increasingly common on petrol engines too.
Valeo Service says many vehicles equipped with EGR fitted as new are starting to fall out of warranty coverage, meaning replacement of the exhaust gas recirculation valve – the main component in the EGR system – could become a more common repair.
EGR technology was developed by VMs as part of the industry’s drive towards reducing emissions and in response to the much tighter Euro 5 and 6 emission regulations which will come into force between 2009 and 2014.
EGR works by recirculating a portion of an engine’s exhaust gas back to the engine cylinders, according to Valeo Service.
Inter-mixing the incoming air with recirculated exhaust gas dilutes the mix with inert gas, lowering the adiabatic flame temperature and (in diesel engines) reducing the amount of excess oxygen.
The valve is the main emissions control component in the EGR system. It is located on the intake manifold, and opens a small passageway between the exhaust and intake manifold to allow a metered amount of exhaust to flow back into the engine. This reduces combustion temperature and pressure which means less NOx emissions.
