The Government is currently funding a series of delivery programmes that help businesses reduce waste at every stage of the business cycle and manage resources more efficiently. The BREW (Business Resource Efficiency and Waste) Programme is returning landfill tax to businesses through free advice and support. This guide will help you make the most of the support available.

Resource Efficiency and Support - Envirowise

Envirowise offers UK businesses free, independent, confidential advice on practical ways to increase profits, minimise waste and reduce environmental impact.

Services include:

• a free helpline offering advice;
• onsite visits from expert advisers who provide tailored guidance;
• information resources and literature including best practice guides;
• events, from workshops to large exhibitions;
• a website with advice and guidance by sector and region; and
• Resource Efficiency Clubs to help companies make resource efficiency savings and share best practice.

Energy Efficiency Advice and Support – Carbon Trust

The Carbon Trust helps businesses cut carbon emissions and capture the potential of low carbon technologies. Their free support leads to reductions in energy bills and greater resource efficiency.

Services include:
• a free helpline offering advice;
• interest-free loans for replacing existing equipment with more energy-efficient equivalents;
• visits and free energy surveys by expert consultants;
• a website with an action plan tool;
• publications including sector specific energy saving advice;
• grants for research and development projects;
• venture capital – Carbon Trust is a co-investor in the low carbon technology field; and
• a carbon management service.

Business Opportunities from Waste - National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP)

The first of its kind in the world, NISP works by facilitating links between industries from different sectors to create sustainable commercial opportunities. Not only does it use one company’s waste as another’s input material, it also considers symbiosis through expertise, capacity, logistics and so on.


Services include:
• a free independent facilitation service to catalyse collaborative opportunities;
• workshops which bring together organisations in order to find symbiosis opportunities;
• a web-based database to allow searches for synergies;
• company visits from experts to identify opportunities; and
• one-day interactive training workshops to help participants understand industrial symbiosis and the NISP database.

Support for the Recycling Sector - Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP)

WRAP offers a number of services to businesses in the recycling sector and businesses wishing to invest in recycling technology. WRAP is also working to create a transparent market to make it as easy as possible to buy and sell recycled materials and is involved in producing independent standards for compost, paper and glass.

Services include:

 

• the eQuip programme to help businesses invest in equipment;
• a range of funds to help businesses in the recycling industry gain access to finance;
• the WRAP Intellectual Property Right scheme to help identify and protect your processing technology or new recycled product; and
• providing information about the recycling sector and free listing services, to couple investors and businesses.

Environmental Regulation Advice - Environment Agency

The Environment Agency can advise businesses about legal and responsible waste management.
Services include:


• the Netregs website www.netregs.gov.uk provides free information to help SMEs understand complex environmental regulations, guidance on how to comply with environmental law and advice on good environmental practice;
• a directory to help find the nearest recycling or waste treatment and disposal organisation www.wasterecycling.org.uk;
• zero tolerance campaigns against fly-tipping to create a level playing field for businesses; and
