AC Delco explains the case of an old battery that refused to give up on its owner
When 88-year-old motorist Bill Armstrong of Perth in Scotland parked up his 1995 Vauxhall Cavalier for a fortnight’s holiday recently, he did so with the car’s nose pointing towards the road, just in case the battery - the original one mind you - failed upon his return and the use of jump leads were required.
However, to his astonishment, the car, which has now covered some 50,000 miles, started effortlessly.
Having owned numerous cars but never having known a battery like the one on his Cavalier, Bill (pictured right) went in search of an explanation by writing to Daily Telegraph newspaper motoring expert Honest John.
The motoring columnist told him the battery in question was the famed Freedom battery from ACDelco. What’s more, Honest John was quick to point out that this particular battery was “one of the best ever made”.
Bill said he did not know batteries could last so long. “Despite the car still having its original battery and being in good working order, over the last five or six years it has only really been used very locally and for shopping,” said Bill.
“I was expecting that I might have a problem starting it after a two week break. A quick turn of the ignition proved me wrong, as the car fired up at the first time of asking and was as lively as ever. Surely there can’t be many batteries out there that have performed as well as this one?”
